As you may have noticed,
Ace’s characters and concepts tend to be confusing as hell. This document,
compiled from answers written by Ace himself, will help you understand it all a
little better.

Bio:
(Timeline is concurrent
with the Archie series of Sonic the Hedgehog comics)
As a young man, Ace was a
punk living in Echidnapolis. While running roughshod on the streets for a few
years as someone who would have become a thug and career criminal, he was
confronted by a jet black echidna wearing a helmet and a cloak. This caped
mystery tossed young Alijah around an alley without having laid a hand on him.
The black echidna identified himself as the retired Guardian known as Specter.
He told Alijah that he had traced his ancestry back to Demitri, the sire of the
Guardians' nemesis: the Dark Legion. To Ace, Specter had essentially told him
that he was a son of some villain's illegitimate bastard line. He offered the
punk a chance to redeem himself in the eyes of society and make himself
something better.
Ace told him to go screw
himself.
Specter knocked him out and
dragged him to a monitoring installation on the Great Continent. He trained Ace
as he would have any Guardian protege. All of it was just in case the current
Guardian's son, Knuckles, died in duty while living on the Floating Island.
Events happened that shook Mobius to its very core over the next eight years.
Robotnik fell from power. The Floating Island was assaulted by a ground based
force and brought down to land. Echidnapolis returned to the main Mobian Zone
of reality. Chaos was released from its prison and quelled. And the
Brotherhood(as the group of clandestine jedi-like older Guardians were known)
accepted Knuckles into their midst. Knuckles even died and came back from the
afterlife.
It was apparent that Ace
wouldn't be needed as an alternate or as assistance.
Being a secret himself for
so long, Ace decided to roam the planet and find more of them. He made friends
and enemies along the way, making it his business to uncover any and every
secret that he could. He became a treasure hunter and archealogist so that he
could understand the knowledge he uncovered and hoarded for himself.
When Dr. Eggman helped
drive away a hoard of aliens from the planet, he uncovered a small goldmine of
clues and information on an item that dwarfed the Chaos Emeralds in the power that
it could bestow upon its weilder. Ace stole all of the Doctor's data on this
item and went after it himself. After a week's worth of fighting and Zone
hopping, he found the shifting reality where the item was said to be hidden. He
found the Emerald green halo and tried to take it for himself, but was killed
by its guardian.
Ace's soul roamed the
reality within the ring for an undetermined amount of time. There, he
interacted with the souls of many who had also been killed and swallowed by the
ring. They encouraged him to use their memories to get the skills he needed to
break free of the ring and fight the guardian who had killed him. He did so and
returned from his journey through their lives and experiences a few minutes too
early. Ace overheard their plan to consume him when he tried to leave their
layer of the ring.
He attacked and slaughtered
them all.
He destroyed them and
consumed them instead. All but a handful of the twisted souls met their end at
Ace's hands. He broke free of their layer of the ring and met the guardian
force known as Caleb on his outermost layer of the ring. The battle went badly
for Ace, as he was being sapped by the creature as they fought. The echidna's
salvation came in the form of two souls who stepped up to help him even though
they once planned to murder him. Shiro and Spades fused their souls with Ace's
and helped him to subdue Caleb. To destroy him, they would have to tap into the
ring's power from the next layer... the outside world.
Ace left the ring a ghost,
plagued by the voices of the sould he'd left behind within the ring and
attached to the leech-like presence of Caleb. He confined the ring to himself
and gained a new body that wasn't bound by the universal laws of any dimension,
but was still a basic copy of his own mortal form. He left the shifting reality
he was in behind and landed in a place called Metro city on a planet called
Earth. The first thing he wanted in this new world was a drink...
Spades

Assimilate
Ether spike
Special/Super:
Elemental
Control(Thunder/Lightning)
Hurricane Bomb
Redstreak Summon
Physical
Characteristics: Has glowing tattoos
all over his body. The most notable tattoo is the series of six diamonds on his
right arm.
Bio:
His first memory was being
blasted through the barriers that separate dimensions. Something called Larz apparently
had something to do with this event. He arrived in a nonsensical reality where
there was no way out. He endlessly fought monsters with as vicious a temperment
as his own. This lone demonic person forced his way through the ruins to the
glowing green ring that called out to him. Before he could claim it for
himself, he was killed.
His soul was pulled into
the ring, but wouldn't diminish like many others had. He held onto his sense of
self by remembering his name and the part of him that had escaped the Larz. He
was the instinct. He was a warning to his real self not to delve into the
deepest part of his soul. A warning and a limiter that was tossed away using
the Larz. The other one lived on, but he was separated and cast into the ring
to wait. He waited in the road that never ended, singing and fighting anyone he
thought could become his other self. The Reason to his Instinct. The Good to
his Evil. The Man to his Monster.
He found a musclebound
individual with dreads on his roadways and sang out his warning. His song of
omen.
After which he declared
himself with the only thing that kept him alive in this place of intangible
spirits and pain.
Spades.
Master Tonberry Shiro
Full Name: Shiro of the Lusus End
Age: Over a millenium or two
Species: Tonberry
Height: 3 feet tall
Fighting Style: Master Tonberry
Moves-
Normal:
Stab!
Karma
Sleepel
Confuse
Demi
Special/Super:
Chains of Karma
Hastega
Flare
Ultima
Everyone's Grudge
Physcial
Characteristics: A completely white Tonberry
with the same weird markings on its skin and clothes as in Final Fantasy 10.
Bio:
As witnesses to the birth
of gods and the events of over a dozen Final Fantasy events(Events so large and
world shaking that they irrevocably change history and the world), the Tonberry
race is gifted with immortality and the power to cross worlds. Sometimes, they
have the habit of running into the very people who are tangled within the
events of such adventures. Most of the time, they chase them off with their karma
hexes and Death scythe knives. On occasion, they are also defeated.
But one Master Tonberry got
lucky and managed to wipe out an entire party of warriors, making the leader
run for his insignificant life. He was filled with the power of his fallen
foes, gaining their mostly positive karma in the process. Possessed by thoughts
and memories he wasn't supposed to have, this Tonberry wrought havoc against
everything he thought was a threat to himself or this supposed important
person, Ramza Beoulve.
When his task with Ramza
was done, the Master Tonberry went about its business roaming different
realities. His mind regressed to a whimsical state that was free of all good
and evil. No perception of either of the two allowed for a clean slate. No
karma.
This childlike entity moved
randomly from place to place, from watching one event to fighting the great
Aeons and then to a place where no Tonberry had ever set a webbed foot.
It was a small reality that
was like a trap. It allowed the Tonberry in, but it could not get out.
It stayed still for a long
time, waiting and watching for an opportunity.
He was disturbed from his
waiting by a punch in the face. The owner of the fist proved to be a capable
playmate. Shiro backed this individual with his strength when it came time to
leave.
When Ace was free however,
he bound himself to the other souls in the ring, including the Tonberry. He was
stuck. The only thing left to do now was wait some more for a time when they
would be unbound and Ace could find a way for everyone to exist by themselves
instead of just a part of one another.

Bio:
Its a nuisance to have so
many voices and ghosts in your head at one time. Ace remedied his problem with
this dementia inducing being that could call upon the planets in the Sol system
for strength. With its heavenly 'brothers' tapped, it would leave Ace alone and
do unbelievable amounts of destruction. The antics of such a being became
boring after a while and summoning it became more of a chore than was
necessary. So Ace decided to unleash it on something that could actually kill
it.
Frieza impaled the monster
with a Master Tonberry and ended the suffering of thousands of greedy powerful
souls enslaved to Ace's will.

Characteristics: Becomes a tall Asian
man in dark robes when summoned by Ace in a non-battle situation. He takes on
the shape of a monster when it comes time to fight.
Bio:
As a Guardian Force it was
Caleb's job to protect the Emerald Ring. He did his job well for a time, but
was subjugated to the echidna's will. He wormed his way through the rodent's
subconscious whenever he could to mentally attack him, but it became hard when
the fool made his mind slippery with alcohol.
Ace suddenly went sober for
a few days. The day came for him to pull off his most daring assault yet, but
there was someone else already trying to kill him. Caleb sat back and watched
passively as the echidna dueled with his ivory skinned opponent. He was completely
off guard when Ace tore him from his nest deep within the ring's world and
placed him into Frieza's psyche.
Instead of dying or
yielding like so many others, Frieza resisted and indeed dominated him. Unlike
Ace, Frieza wasn't afraid to use this parasitic monster for himself. He
reshaped Caleb into a tool so that they could fight together against Ace.
The alien bled away all of
the GF's hate with each successful attack. When Frieza discarded him, Ace wiped
the GF's soul and Junctioned him to his own soul. After that fight, Caleb has
existed as the Guardian of Ace's soul since he was the keeper of the ring. He
is now compliant with the echidna's wishes and comes whenever he summons him.
1. Ace can't actually do it [spellsing] on his own, it's a power he needs Redstreak to use himself. Without the sword in its final form (the guitar/Axe) he's incapable of doing it. It's an ability unique to Redstreak and the one wielding it.
2. Ace's strength is comparitive to a Super Saiyan while in Super Ace mode. Normally, he's only as strong as every DBZ character was during the arc when Vegeta first came to Earth. Spades' level is equal to about the level of one of the Androids (17, 18, etc). Since you're going to play FF7 and eventually FFX, then Shiro's power is about the level of a Master Tonberry at the end of either game, very strong. Tonberrys are one of the top class of monsters you'll randomly encounter in that game right next to Malboros and some dragons. His skill is magically based, but his endurance and constitution are very high. Consider him about as strong as Spades. Caleb is a middle tier summon creature, so his strength comes in spurts, but I'd equate it to being as strong as the Aeon, Valefor(FFX) or Cell in one of his unevolved forms. Shard is an amalgamation of the dead spirits in the ring, but since there aren't any more left he prolly won't be coming back. Shard's strength was all spiritual and his body was just a construct akin to an ant colony working together to one goal, that's why it regenerated so much and never felt pain. Shard's strength varies from being as strong as a Super Saiyan to being more powerful than Caleb. If Ace and his other aspects end up getting beaten and sent back into the ring, they could merge another Shard from their own souls like Fusion does to someone's body. It wouldn't last long, but it'd be as strong as Kid Buu.
3. The ring, huh? I've been thinking about that for a while.
It's essentially one of those energy producing artifacts that lets you bend and twist reality. It's a scientific impossiblity since energy can't be created or destroyed, only converted into one form or another. The ring serves as the physical manifistation of a pocket dimension as well, a place that houses a road to many different dimensions. The artficat is now junctioned to Ace's spirit and has the souls of Spades and Shiro in it. Also belonging to Ace is Caleb, his Guardian Force. The Ring used to tie him to the multitude of souls caught in it until Frieza killed Shard and all of them at once. While inside of it, Shiro and Spades wander the pocket dimsions within, trying to find a way out of it and back to their respective worlds. As of now Spades has pretty much lost interest, but Shiro keeps trying. As far as control or influence is concerned, Ace has massive influence over the ring and everything inside of it, so he can summon (post Frieza vs Ace) his other personalities whenever he pleases. They have to listen to him, but they aren't outright being controlled. The ring gives him the ability to utilize their powers and knowledge(Spades' energy manipulation and Shiro's forbidden magic) and also the adaptation of seeing the UEF field. Since almost everything is connected(example:A tree connected to a kid who sat under it who's connected to a chicken whom he ate that was from another country, and it keeps going farther back in time with more and more conncetions added to the web), it's hard to know where to start.
4. The thing about the Spades in the SASB world is that he isn't really the actual Spades. He's a split personality that came from Rob Olara when he finally went through his Emergance, a process that unlocks his inborn abilities. Before then, he'd been forcing the transformation into Spades rather than controlling it. When he fought against a reality altering alien named Larz, he manipulated Larz's energies to split his bloodthirsty alternate self from his personality. This other self got flung through the void and ended up in the pocket dimension inside the ring. I based the layer he was trapped in on the Cosmic Interstate from the Sonic comic that Archie does, the Road the Never Ends. He met up with and fought countless people, killing them all until he calmed down one day years later. This Spades is an empty offshoot of the real Spades, that's why he has no memory. The only way he could ever get any sort of memory would be to use his UEF field to find his other self and gleam the memories off of him. At the moment, he's just living in the moment, "hanging around until something happens" as you said.
